What's the difference between "self storage boxes" and traditional storage units?
Traditional storage units require you to drive to a facility, rent a truck, load everything, and drive it there (and back when you need access). Big Box self storage boxes come to you – we deliver the container to your home, you load at your own pace (no rush!), and we pick it up when you’re ready. It’s like having a storage unit in your driveway without any of the hassle or truck rental costs!
Do I need to buy special boxes or containers to pack my items?
No! You can pack your belongings in your own boxes, bins, or even load furniture directly into the Big Box. The container itself IS the storage box—measuring 8’L x 5’W x 7’H. However, for best protection, we recommend using sturdy cardboard boxes or plastic bins for smaller items. You can order packing supplies when scheduling your delivery online if needed.
What type of lock should I use on my self storage box?
If you’re keeping the Big Box on-site at your property, you can use any standard padlock you prefer—disc locks provide extra security. For boxes stored at our secure indoor facility (7077 Consolidated Way), your container is protected by our facility’s comprehensive security system including on-site staff, video surveillance, motion sensors, and perimeter alarms—adding your own lock provides additional peace of mind.
Can I store a self storage box in an apartment complex or condo?
Many apartment and condo residents successfully use Big Box! Check with your property manager about temporary container placement in parking areas or loading zones. Some customers have us deliver to their parking space, load over a weekend, and we pick up Monday morning. If on-site placement isn’t allowed, we can store your loaded box at our facility and you access it there—still eliminating truck rentals!
How do self storage boxes work for staged moves between homes?
Perfect for staged moves! We deliver the box to your current home. You load over several days or weeks (no time pressure). When ready, we pick it up and either: (1) deliver directly to your new San Diego address, or (2) store at our facility if there’s a gap between move-out and move-in dates. When your new place is ready, we deliver there—you never have to load/unload a truck multiple times!
What size is the Big Box storage unit?
Each Big Box measures 8′ x 5′ x 7′ (L x W x H exterior) and can typically hold one room of contents. Should you need additional space, multiple Big Boxes can always be delivered. Should you need assistance in determining how many Big Boxes you may need, please utilize the online storage space estimator or contact a representative at (619) 353-5653.
What are your hours?
Big Box Storage is open seven days a week. Representatives are available between the hours of 7:30am and 6:00pm Monday through Friday and weekend hours are from 7:30am to 5:00 pm (excluding major holidays). Existing customers may also access their account information and make payments online 24 hours a day.
How secure and weatherproof is a Big Box?
Big Box storage units are designed to be both secure and weather-resistant. Their wooden construction naturally insulates against temperature changes and regulates humidity, helping to keep the interior stable and reduce the risk of mold and mildew.
What's the difference between a Big Box and a metal storage container?
A Big Box storage container is made of wood, which won’t rust or corrode, making it ideal for long-term storage. The smooth, forgiving surfaces also help protect furniture and valuables from scratches and dents.
How do I access my belongings at your storage facility?
Access is available every day of the week. To access your belongings, simply provide two hours advance notice between the hours of 10am and 3pm (need to call by 1pm and finish by 4pm) and your Big Box(es) will be ready for you when you arrive at the San Diego storage facility. There’s never a charge to access your storage!
