When you were younger, did you have an elder tell you to save your pennies for a rainy day? It may not have seemed like fun at the time, but if you took their advice to heart you would be thankful you did should an emergency arise. You know the kind… A busted water heater that chose to wait until you were in Florida for a Disney vacation that you’ve planned for a year… So you come back home to water damage, a busted water heater, sunburn and stroller cuts on your heels.

Whatever your need for emergency storage in San Diego is, chances are you are going to need contractors, installers, and other laborers to come into your home and do some major repairs. And in order to do that everything must go, as they say. All the furniture. All the things. All the stuff.

Now is the time for solutions and Big Box Storage is here to help you figure out what to do next. So let’s get started.

First, you have to think about the size of your unexpected project. Are you looking at one centralized room of damage, or a floor? The whole house? Depending on how much space you need that may help determine the type of storage you might need to go for.

Researching a traditional storage facility will yield results with several sizes available. Small self-storage units range from 5’x5’ to 5’x10’ and are great for storing boxes, small furniture or the contents of one room. Medium self-storage units range from 5’x15’ to 10’x10’ and are perfect for storing the contents of a one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment. Large self-storage units range from 10’x15’ to 10’x25’ and are ideal for storing items from a two-bedroom house or larger.

Big Box Storage containers are each 8' x 5' x 7' and can generally hold the contents of up to one and a half rooms (multiple containers can be delivered, at a discounted price, should you need additional space). One of the perks that you will find with a portable storage solution such as Big Box Storage, is the ability to store each room in its own “Big Box”.  Invariably, you’ll pack something away that you need access to, so when that time comes you’ll know exactly which Big Box has your passport and which would have the power tools in it. Further, Big Box Storage can accommodate any project no matter how big or how small. Need storage for multiple rooms? Feel free to order multiple Big Boxes. You are always free to overestimate how many you may need, as you will only pay for the number of Big Boxes that you actually use. So for example, if Big Box brought out 3 units and you got everything into 2, then you would only be charged for the 2 units that you actually used.

You might find with many storage facilities in San Diego, your monthly storage fees vary depending on that month’s market rate. It is not an uncommon practice for traditional storage facilities to raise their rates even on their faithful, long term customers. With Big Box Storage, you never have to worry about ever-changing rates or variable fees. Your monthly rental rate is backed by our lowest price guarantee. It's quite simple in that if you should find a better rate elsewhere, we'll gladly beat it by 10% or more. That being said we are very knowledgeable about our competitors and think that you would be hard-pressed to find a portable storage company that can beat our storage rates. (We’ll even beat their sale price!) Our guaranteed lowest price for monthly rent would be $74 on a month-to-month basis. But since the contractors found extensive termite damage and you are cash flowing this whole project, you are going to need quite a bit more time to save up. If you commit to a 12-month term, your rental rate would be $64, again backed by our lowest price guarantee.

When shopping around for traditional storage rates, one should also consider all possible applicable costs including possible truck rental fees, time involved with going to and from the storage facility, time involved with loading the storage unit, possible “move-in” charges (many self-storage companies will charge $15 or $20 for such, and of course the monthly storage rental rate). Self-storage facilities in San Diego often charge anywhere from $60 to $90 as a monthly rental rate for a 40 sq. ft. unit. Note that these rates obviously do not include the other potential costs and fees mentioned above.

What is the best way to load the box?

For the best run-down on how to pack your Big Box, check out our blog on Storage Unit Packing Tips. TL/DR? Place heavy items on the bottom, fragile things should be bubble wrapped or covered with blankets and secured, and everything should be as level as possible (no towering boxes on one side that could fall over during transport). Finally, be sure to utilize the tie down hooks located on the interior side walls of the Big Box.

What if I don’t want to load up the Big Box myself?

Manual labor just isn’t for everyone. If you are interested in having someone do the heavy lifting for you we have several contacts for licensed, bonded and insured professional movers. We can’t rave enough about our mover friends, and their Yelpers agree! Contact our friendly customer service representatives for more information on contacting a mover.

Now you’ve got the hard part of loading your storage out of the way. You’ve put in the sweat equity and you’ve bribed your best friends with pizza and drinks to help you get your items safely stored in your unit. But then you realize you packed your dog’s heartworm meds away and you’ve got to get that out ASAP. If you aren’t keeping a portable storage unit on-site, different storage solutions mean you have several options for accessing your stored belongings once they are no longer in your home. If you decided to utilize a standard traditional storage facility, you may have more of a “self-service” approach to accessing. Typically with this option, you would be given a pin number that you would input using a keypad that controls a gate or door to the property. Once on property, you would drive or walk to your unit where you will be able to access your items. Generally speaking, this type of access allows for unlimited trips to or from the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and may or may not be operated with a representative on site.

Typically with portable storage companies, you will find their main warehouse facility is located outside of the city where land costs much less, and if you ever need to access any items that are stored inside, they require you to pay a delivery fee to have the unit returned to you.

Other portable storage companies might have locations within the city, but the units are stored outside in an unpaved lot, exposed to the elements (including pests like vermin and insects).

Access and Security

With Big Box Storage, your Big Boxes are stored in one of our centrally located facilities in San Diego. Not only are they kept inside a secured warehouse, but should you need it we offer access 7 days a week with just a 2-hour notice between the hours of 10am and 5pm. Upon arrival, check-in with a member of our office staff with your photo identification card, and you will be directed to your Big Box. Once you are finished, our expert warehouse team will return your storage unit inside the facility for continued safekeeping.

From there you will have peace of mind that your Big Box is secured and safely stored away from the general public. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. And it’s for the best really. We’ve heard too many stories throughout the years from our customers who have left storage facilities where someone just walked right up to their unit, cut the lock off and stole items from inside. Not a possibility with Big Box Storage! Not even the bugs can get in. We treat the premises weekly for pests and constantly monitor for activity. Our grounds are under constant video surveillance and we offer 3 layer security to deter even the most determined wrongdoer.

Arguably one of the best selling points of portable storage is how much time you will save by not handling your items multiple times. Think about it, you get to avoid reserving a rental truck, picking it up and making multiple trips back and forth in traffic delivering items to your storage unit (and for the unload too once you are done storing!) Once you’ve loaded your Big Box at your home, you are done - we will take it from there! On average, a customer saves about 2.3 hours of valuable time not having to load or unload a truck or drive to and from a self-storage center to load a traditional unit. And when you are ready for it to come back home we will bring it back to you, whether that’s in San Diego or even out of state (in case you were thinking about selling the house instead of fixing it because your in-laws convinced you to take the equity out of your house and move to a tiny home in Wisconsin. Don’t laugh. It happens.)

So whether your need for emergency storage in San Diego is great or small, our Big Box Storage Units are the best portable option in San Diego.
